THE Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), on Tuesday, welcomed delegates to the 2018 World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) celebration with a candle night-vigil at the Ghana International Press Centre in Accra. The event was attended by local and international journalists, as well as representatives of civil society organisations and traditional rulers.

ACCRA, April 4, (GJA) – THE Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has distanced itself from a group of Ghanaians claiming to be journalists who were deported from Australia ahead of the Commonwealth Games which opened Wednesday.

The so-called journalists were deported because the Australian authorities were not convinced about their mission since they did not carry the requisite equipment for the coverage of such sporting event.

ACCRA, March 27, (GJA) – THE Government of Ghana, under the auspices of the Ministry of Information, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO, have jointly launched the 2018 World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) in Accra.

The global event themed: “Keeping power in check: Media, justice and the rule of law”, is expected to be attended by about 700 journalists, media practitioners and other stakeholders from all over the world.

The 25th WPFD, which will be hosted in Ghana, the first African country to do so, will cover issues of media and the transparency of the political process, the independence and media literacy of the judicial system, and the accountability of state institutions towards the public.

ACCRA, March 29, (GJA) – THE Ghana Journalists Assocation (GJA) has condemned “in no uncertain terms” alleged police brutalities on a reporter of Joy News last Tuesday.

 

Iddrisu Latif was allegedly assaulted by a number of police officers at the Headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) while covering protestations by sympathisers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against the arrest of the party’s Deputy General Secretary, Koku Anyidoho, for treasonable charges.

ACCRA, March 25, (GJA) – THE Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has commended the Executive for laying the Right to Information Bill, 2018 in Parliament and urged the House to pass the bill immediately.

“We call on Parliament to end the musical chair game with the bill and pass it into law immediately,” the GJA said in a statement issued Sunday and signed by its President, Affail Monney.
